We just learned today that there were over one million online fraud attempts in Britain in the first six months of year. That's one every fifteen seconds or more than fifty percent higher than the same period of 2015.

To be exact, between January 1st and June 30, 2016, there were no less than 1,007,098 online fraud cases in Great Britain compared to just 660,304 in the first 6 months of last year.

Each single case represents an access card or account attacked, not an individual person, however.

Britain's payment industry is calling on consumers to 'give it some thought' before giving out personal details.

Various surveys demonstrate that most people are aware of the common tactics used by online scammers. But people still give out their details nevertheless. About 26.9 percent of online users said they’d provided personal details even though they knew they should not do so.

Tony Blake, fraud prevention officer of the Dedicated Card and Payment Crime Unit said-- “Many people already know the do's and don’ts when it comes to sharing personal details, but it's easy to forget if you feel flustered, pressurized or rushed into sharing information.”

Last year, total online losses came in at £755m, up 26 percent compared to 2014. More than 74.8 percent were the result of payment card fraud and 22 percent from remote banking.

About 71.6 percent of card frauds were related to remote purchases, 13 percent were due to lost and stolen cards, about 8 per cent were due to counterfeit cards and 7 percent due to card ID theft, either using documents to fraudulently obtain a card or using such information to take control of an existing card or its related account.
