According to various reports published this week, the overall number of DDoS (distributed denial of service) attacks has doubled over the past year, and the trend appears to be rising rapidly.

For its part, Akamai reports that the second quarter of this year saw a 129.3 percent year-on-year increase in total DDoS attacks.

During the same period, Akamai managed to reduce a total of 4,919 attacks, one of which was against a media company. The attacks reached an eye-popping 363n Gbps.

And although ten attacks topped out at over 100 Gbps, the median rate of attack actually fell to an average of 3.85 Gbps, Akamai said.

NTP reflection attacks (a type of attack that relies on using insecure network time protocol servers to increase attack volumes) almost quadrupled, increasing a whopping 276 percent over the same time period.

On any given day, the gaming and software industries still remain by far the most frequently targeted industries for DDoS attacks over the last six months, the latest edition of Akamai’s State of the Internet Security Report.

The research also looked at web application attacks. Akamai reports that Q2 2016 revealed a 14 percent rise in total web application attacks over the previous quarter.

SQL injection (44 percent) and Local File Inclusion (45 percent) were the two most common attack vectors in the second quarter of 2016.

Additionally, the retail industry was the most frequently targeted sector at 40 percent, with web application attacks in the second quarter.

It will be interesting to see what the next 4 to 6 months will have in store for the industry. But for now, all indicators seem to point to a continued rise in the trend for DDoS attacks on the internet community.
