Hackers pull down Viktor Yushchenko's Web siteAdd to October 31, 2007 Late last Sunday, Internet attackers and protestors from many countries launched a large-scale DoS (denial of service) attack and temporarily disabled the Web site of Ukraine's President Viktor Yushchenko, his office said yesterday. A Russian nationalist group reportedly claimed full responsibility for the attacks. Hackers attacked servers in Russia, Britain, Kazakhstan, the United States, Israel and Ukraine. The attacks continued right through Tuesday afternoon, the presidential press service told the news media. Overall, more than 18,000 attacks have reportedly been carried out, temporarily blocking access to the President's site. The site could still not be accessed late Tuesday night. Hackers called Yushchenko's government a "fascist regime" and accused it of attacking the organization's Moscow office. As is usual in such cases, Yushchenko's office denied all of the claims. The group has vehemently opposed Yushchenko's campaign to bring Ukraine into the European Union and NATO, considering the former Soviet republic part of Russia's area of influence. On their blog, a radical Russian nationalist youth group, the Eurasian Youth Movement, claimed responsibility for the attacks, saying it was their retaliation for Yushchenko's office's alleged attack of their on Web site, which had been disabled. The Eurasian Youth Movement is strongly critical of the West and opposes what it calls a U.S. encroachment on Russia's traditional sphere of influence. Its leader, Alexander Dugin, has been completely barred from entering the Ukraine. On October 5, the group claimed responsibility for desecrating a monument to Ukraine's independence erected on top of the country's highest mountain — an act that drew condemnation from many Ukrainians.
