An incredible 98.2 million email accounts and their cleartext passwords have been stolen from Russia's largest email service Rambler.ru.

It isn't the first time that the Rambler service has been hacked, and the company has been criticized in the past for similar security incidents involving more than 40 million email accounts.

Another but similar security incident occurred on February 17, 2012 according to security breach repository service LeakedSource and it appears to have gone unreported in intervening years.

This represents a significant win for hackers wanting to compromise Russian accounts. Over 98 million cleartext passwords is a large treasure trove for them, and one that we are bound to hear a lot more from.

The security breach was reported by the same user who handed LeakedSource some 43.6 million cleartext passwords breached dating back to 2012.

"Almost 100 million records have been leaked online in yet another huge security incident," system admins wrote on the site.

"Rambler.ru is the Russian version of U.S.-based Yahoo," the site added. Rambler.ru competes with Russian social media giant VK.com, a site that saw almost 200 email accounts leaked in June 2016.

Rambler did not respond to requests for comment by the time of publication. Users are urged to find enterprise-class email service providers that offer increased security features combined with dependable redundant email servers preventing the loss of email messages to businesses.
