It's reported today that a database of thirteen million MacKeeper users has been easily accessed online, potentially exposing personal details, and seriously compromising the data of all its users.

Overall, millions of email addresses, phone numbers, IP addresses and insecure passwords for the controversial Apple Mac cleanup utility were exposed at large because MongoDB databases hosting the information were misconfigured.

This security incident has left millions of users wide open to several risks. Security researcher Chris Vickery stumbled on the 20 GB data trove using the Shodan machine data search engine.

Kromtech, the company behind MacKeeper, had left databases open to external connections without the usual authentication process, we are told.

In a statement, Kromtech admitted to the security breach while trying to minimize the impact of the issue by claiming that only Vickery had accessed the information.

It then added that it had solved the problem within hours and that credit card information had never been exposed.

MacKeeper has a poor reputation among many in internet security circles because of its aggressive promotion through pop-up ads of questionable utility, among other things.

At the time of this publication, we were still waiting for additional information from Kromtech. We will update you once we get more data from the company.
