May 7, 2008

A Woodbury, Connecticut individual has been found guilty for his involvement with Warez sites and has been sent to state prison for two-and-a-half years for copyright infringement. Warez sites consist of organized groups that distribute illegal content such as software and music, using mainly the Internet and even sometimes the postal system as their means of illegal distribution of pirated software.

The man, 26 year old David Fish was further sentenced to 3 additional years on probation after pleading guilty to criminal copyright infringement and various other circumvention offences.

According to various court papers, from January 2003 to July of 2005, Fish served as the official webmaster as well as a scripter, equipment supplier, broker and even encoder for multiples warez sites. He illegally bypassed many copyright controls on DVDs and uploaded copyrighted content without proper approval.

Authorities also seized all the computer equipment that Fish used to commit the offences.

The case is part of the FBI and the U.S. Attorney's Office-led Operation Copycat, which targets online warez groups that illegally distribute newly-released movies, games, software and music online.

To this day, Operation Copycat has successfully led to over forty convictions as part of an overall federal investigation against the illegal distribution of copyrighted materials, known as Operation Site Down (OSD).
