Microsoft said earlier today it will make available on its website later today four critical security updates that will prevent remote execution vulnerabilities in Windows, Internet Explorer, Office, Outlook, Outlook Express and Windows Mail (Windows Mail is only used in the Vista operating system).

Of the four updates, two of the critical security flaws reside in Vista, and one in Internet Explorer 7, two software programs that were created using Microsoft's highly-acclaimed Trustworthy Computing Security Development Lifecycle, a process that's designed to make them more resilient to potential attacks.

The Windows Vista operating system will also get one patch rated "very important."

In total, Microsoft has disclosed seven critical security patches that are available today on the company's site.

The patches have been available since about 10.00 AM Pacific.

Microsoft has officially determined that the second Tuesday of each month is the regular release date for security updates.

The Redmond giant announces specific details of these updates on the Thursday prior, to give IT administrators ample time to prepare.

As usual, the company will also update its Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool.

Microsoft also plans to issue three high-priority, non-security updates on Microsoft Update and one on Windows Update. Details will be posted on this website as they become available.
