Robert Half Technology's latest survey reveals that 2005's highest priorities for CIOs are network security. The survey, which canvassed 1,400 CIOs from U.S. companies with over 100 employees, revealed that priorities were as follows:

--- Network security improvements: 35 percent
--- Operating-system upgrade/installation: 16 percent
--- Database upgrade/installation: 15 percent
--- Customer relationship management (CRM): 15 percent
--- Data storage and backup: 13 percent
--- Hardware purchases: 11 percent
--- Wireless communications: 10 percent
--- ERP upgrade/installation: 8 percent
--- Development of e-business applications: 6 percent

The vast distance between the number one priority, network security, and the other categories underlines how important security has come to be in business and e-business alike.

In addition, companies are able to justify budgeting a lot more money for security because investments deliver straightforward results.

Take the realm of spam, including viruses and other malware. Ferris Research recently pointed out that, while the volume of spam has quintupled in just a few years, companies have only spent twice as much on anti-spam during the same period.

The same principle operates across the realm of network security. Think of the project as an iron door. Once built, it can repel any number of attacks; that's what makes it such an attractive investment.

While security is first on the list, it is still important to note the relatively place of CRM. Despite years of investment, 15 percent of companies are still eager to build out this application area. That'll be good news for the vendors currently fighting it out for new CRM business.
